An official home for the #WacoCreative– A Waco Cultural District

Every Wacoan knows Waco is something special, and it seems that more and more people are discovering our hidden gems too. What is it, though, that sets Waco apart? As many Waco creatives would attest to, it seems that Waco has an inspired air about it that has artists from many different fields in love.

Graphic artists, photographers, crafters, painters, writers, potters, entrepreneurs, marketers…. they seem to breathe a new creative energy into our everyday lives. Now, thanks to the new kid on the block in the non-profit world, Creative Waco, these creative minds may have an “official” home in Wacotown.

Creative Waco has come alongside our city to push for a state-designated Cultural District, most likely in downtown. This is some exciting stuff for Wacotown natives– it could mean more funding for the district and more of an established place for creative happenings and store fronts. But, what is the significance of such a district in our neck of the woods? Well, we may be a little biased, but we think having an established creative presence in our town could bring about a whole lot of change.

Infusing our people’s artistry into what our town will be recognizable for, will allow Waco to take on a new shape. The creative mind is already hardwired for exploring possibilities and navigating opportunity, and as Wacotown is beginning to take the spotlight these attributes will be essential to continuing the contagious innovation that seems to be the engine of change in our community. Collaborations between businesses and creatives would also blossom within an established Cultural District. The close proximity between the businessman and creative would create a platform that could change the way business is done and push the status quo– bringing about a breath of fresh air for our evolving town.

Ultimately, what a Cultural District could mean for Waco is continued growth. Many people say Waco is the “Next Austin”, but we believe this Cultural District– and the collective Waco Creative community, could do a little better than the next Austin. We believe the community in Waco is creating its own unique face and name– and we have to say, we like you Wacotown.
