Ever noticed your mood declining as rain or cold weather sets in? You’re not alone. Weather, especially during the winter season, can create mood shifts causing productivity levels to fluctuate dramatically.

Below are a few tips to boost your mood during the winter season. Don’t surprised when your energy or motivation decreases when the weather gets gloomy. Instead be prepared by using one of the tips below to stay on top of your mood and productivity levels.

  1. Open the blinds or turn off your fluorescent lights

Exposure to natural sunlight lifts mood and increases productivity. According to a study performed in 2014, people who are exposed to natural light have much more energy compared to those exposed to artificial light. The study also showed that cortisol levels drop significantly when exposed to artificial light, which means our stress levels increase.

By simply allowing a little more sunlight into your work space or by decreasing the amount of artificial light you are exposed to, you are much more likely to stay energized and less stressed at work.

  1. Drink more water

The temptation to drink something warm, like coffee, when the weather is cold is often too good to pass up. However, studies have shown that the more caffeine you consume, the more addicted you become, causing your energy levels to actually drop and your stress levels to rise. Instead reach for a glass of water; it will improve both your mood and energy levels.

  1. Take a walk

I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that exercise is a major mood lifter, but you may find that even the smallest effort to move around a little more can be very beneficial.

An article published by NPR earlier this year cited a study that claimed that two minutes of activity every hour can have a major impact on your mood and health. Light activities, like walking, for five minutes per day on the hour can actually burn up to 1,000 more calories each week. Try setting an alarm on your watch or phone to go off each hour to remind you to take a walk around the office!

Try one or all of these tips to stay on top of your mood and productivity levels this winter season.
