Work Culture: People First, Business Second

01/27/16

|

My company is __________.

The words that fill that blank will say a lot about the perception of your company– and in an office with a great sense of work culture, an executive board member and an intern will likely give similar answers. But why?– because work culture cast vision and brings identity to an office.

Contrary to what many people to believe, work culture is not just an aesthetic attribute of a company– that just scratches the surface of what company culture is. In its most effective state, work culture is at the very core of who a company is. It defines what kind of company you want to be and how you will get there– giving the workplace a sense of unity and purpose that will diffuse past the doors of your office to your consumer.

It’s more than just Kum-ba-yahs and trust falls though– to create a coherent office culture, communicating values to company team members will be key. But this can be harder than you would think. Executive leadership will need to identify what those values specifically are before they can shape their employees by them. For example, it’s easy to say that you want to be a leader in your industry, but in what way do you want to lead? And how does that leadership translate to office behavior? Or maybe your company places value on transparency, but how transparent are you in the workplace? Company leadership directs how office culture develops and, in turn, sets the stage for success by establishing the ways the company will strive to achieve– and as a result, empowers all members of the company to be a part of that success.

Ultimately, a company that seeks to establish good work culture is one that combats the old mindset of “business first, people second”, because at the end of the day, work culture champions the people you work with. With this central value in place, the entire company’s perspective shifts, and suddenly you are working in a energetic, purpose-infused environment.
