MM: Boundaries Might Not Be Such A Bad Thing

05/02/16

|

Anyone else cringe when they hear the word “boundaries”? Even mentioning the word can make me feel uncomfortable at best. But maybe boundaries aren’t as bad as we think – they may be necessary.

If not careful, I’m the kind of person who can unknowingly run myself into the ground. One day I’ll look up and wonder why I’m face down. Then I come to the conclusion that maybe boundaries could have prevented the face down moment if I had taken the time to set them in the first place.

Boundaries are a good thing – for our jobs, finances, roles, relationships and responsibilities. They hem us in a way that creates a safety net when life starts to speed up.

This may not sound very motivating, but allow me to suggest that taking the time to create boundaries can make you more effective in the long run.

Think about what you need in order to do or be the best you possibly can. What helps you reach your fullest potential? Is it time by yourself or a weekend away? Maybe it involves spending time with family or friends or doing something you enjoy simply because you want to.

If you’re having trouble identifying what helps you be your best, try thinking about a time or two you felt run down or burnt out. What did you lack during that time? Quality time with loved ones? An exercise plan? Depending on what comes to mind, try creating space for some of those things.

It’s easy to get excited about meeting goals, but don’t forget to set boundaries before you begin. Taking time to set a few personal guidelines can protect you in the long run.

One disclaimer: let me be clear – setting boundaries is not an excuse for laziness or to treat yourself to whatever you want whenever you want.

Boundaries exist to hem us in so that we move forward safely, without the danger of running too far too fast.
