Ads that follow you around the web

It happened to me recently when I was thinking about a new pair of dress shoes for work. After visiting the Allen Edmonds website I began seeing their ads on Facebook and several other sites.

Have you had a similar experience? In the digital marketing world of today, that's called "retargeting".

Did you see the movie back in the early 2000's called Minority Report with Tom Cruise? In the movie there is a scene where Tom Cruise walks into a mall and an advertising screen reads his eyeball and customizes the advertising and messaging to what he has bought in the past. (In the movie, he has someone else's eyes but that's not really relevant) Now, digital marketing is nowhere close to being that advanced that I'm aware of. But the concept is the same. Advertisers using your past searches and visits to websites to cater messages to you.
